Prudencio Tayamen

Prudencio Patoc Tayamen, 100, of Naalehu, died April 24, 2022 at his residence. Born March 5, 1922, in Ilocos Norte, Laoag, Philippines, he was a retired seed cutter for Ka‘u Sugar Co. and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Friends may call at 7:30 a.m. June 4 at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Naalehu; funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. followed by burial at the Naalehu County Cemetery. The family request casual attire and flowers are welcome.

He is survived by sons, Harlen Tayamen of Ocean View, Clayton (Connie) Tayamen of Hilo, Afton (Sylvia) Tayamen of Kailua-Kona and Galen (Alina) Cajigal of Oahu; daughters, Tessie (Floyd) Paeyerneers of California, Adel Tayamen of Missouri, Janelle Costa and Thelma (Walter) Bacxa, all of Kailua-Kona; 26 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Susan Teeters

Susan “Sue” Lee Teeters, 78, of Pahoa, died May 21, 2022 at the Hilo Medical Center. Born in Long Beach, California, she was the first female welder at Honokaa Sugar Mill.

Services will be held, contact family for more information.

She is survived by son, James (Amanda) Arndt of Centralia, Washington; daughter, Dannielle Mercado of Pahoa; 32 grandchildren; and 35 great-grandchildren.

Edwin Hayashi

Edwin Toyozo Hayashi, 84, of Hilo, died April 10, 2022, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, he was a retired professor of Hawaii Community College and former member of the Hawaii Army National Guard.

Friends may call for a drive-thru visitation from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 9 at Dodo Mortuary upper carport in Hilo. Private service to follow. Casual attire.

He is survived by wife, Karla Hayashi; sons, Michael (Chieko) Hayashi, Kevin (Teri) Hayashi, Darren (Misao Maurer) Hayashi; daughter, Michele (Gregg) Yonemori; sisters, Yoriko (Ray) Nakao, Betty (Howard) Mukai, Iris (Ronald) Tanaka; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Kukoa Carbone

Infant Kukoa Dominic Ushi Carbone, of Hilo, died May 25, 2022, at Hilo Medical Center. He was also born in Hilo.

Memorial visitation 4 to 6 p.m. June 7 at the Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Casual attire.

He is survived by parents, Jonathan and Mino‘akaoke‘alohi Carbone of Hilo; sister, Nowelo Carbone of Hilo; brother, Ka’io Carbone of Hilo; paternal grandparents, Richard and Jane Carbone of Hilo; maternal grandparents, Aaron and Nadeen Kahananui of Kona and Daniel and Sharon Misae Wela of Hilo; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

James Kowalski

James “Jim” Joseph Kowalski, 84, of Pahoa, died May 13, 2022 at home. Born Feb. 17, 1938, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he was a retired math teacher for Hilo High School, avid golfer at Hilo Municipal Golf Course, one of the Big Island’s original soccer coaches for AYSO, as well as a youth basketball coach for the Police Athletic League, served two years in the Peace Corps in Nigeria, and an adult group home counselor for ARC (Association for Retarded Citizens) for many years.

Services at a later date.

He is survived by wife, Carrie Kowalski of Pahoa; sons, Jacob Kowalski of Honolulu and Jason (Donna) Kowalski of Elk Grove, California; and grandchildren, Kylie Kowalski and Brady Kowalski, both of Elk Grove, California.

Louis Washington

Louis (Louie) Washington, 64, of Kaneohe, Oahu, died May 16, 2022, in Las Vegas. Born Sept. 16 1958, he was known as Mr. Aloha.

Services will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada, and will be announced at a later date.

He is survived by sisters Andrea (Sweetie) Washington Ma’ae, Pastor Olga (Kitty) Washington Hoaeae, Cotillia (Leimomi) Washington Kalili and Pamela Washington Spells; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.
